Welcoming a new baby into your family is one of life’s biggest milestones, and your newborn photos should reflect more than just what your baby looked like during those first few weeks. They should tell the story of this season of life, including the relationships, the tiny details, and the spaces that already feel like home.
As a Houston newborn photographer, I approach every session a little differently because every baby and every family is unique. While safety and comfort always come first, there are a handful of newborn poses and storytelling moments that I naturally gravitate toward during my in-home newborn photography sessions.
If you’re wondering what kinds of photos you can expect during your newborn session, these are some of my favorite images to create and why I love them so much.

When it comes to photos that incorporate parents or the whole family, I love creating space for genuine moments. If you’re okay with your toddler standing on the bed or couch I LOVE this shot because it draws out an intimacy between all the family members. Something magical happens when you ask a toddler to hug mom around the neck. It is such a sweet interaction siblings have with mom or dad. As an added bonus, it gets faces really close together and layered together in a flattering way. Sometimes I even ask the toddler to look over moms shoulder at the baby which gets sweet interactions or even to hide behind mom and jump out at me and play peek-a-boo. This approach provides so much versatility because the photos can be sweet & sentimental or playful and lively.

Sibling photos are often the most unpredictable part of a newborn session and that’s exactly why I love them. Young children aren’t usually interested in sitting perfectly still and smiling at the camera, and honestly, that’s not what I’m looking for anyway. Some of my favorite sibling images happen when children are simply interacting naturally with their new baby brother or sister.
Whenever possible, I love using a rocking chair for sibling portraits. Not only does it provide beautiful window light, but it also creates one of the safest environments for siblings who are ready and excited to hold the baby. If a sibling isn’t comfortable holding the baby, that’s completely okay too. We can create beautiful images on a bed, couch, or other safe location that allows them to interact naturally.

My favorite newborn poses with dad focus on just how tiny a newborn really is. When dads hold their babies close, I love using different angles, lighting, and compositions to highlight the incredible size difference between them. One of my favorite details to capture is dad’s hands wrapped around the baby. Years from now, those images become a powerful reminder of just how small your newborn once was.
During these portraits, I’ll often move around the room looking for different lighting opportunities. Sometimes that means creating a soft, shadowy image. Other times, it means positioning dad near a window for bright, natural light.

One of the simplest newborn poses is often one of my favorites. Laying baby on a blanket, pillow, or even a couch or bed consistently gives me some of my favorite photos. This approach keeps them super comfortable, especially when I utilize my heating pad. I love this one because I can be really close or pull far away and get tons of mileage and variety out of this shot. I can include props, leave the baby on their own, pull wide to see what’s happening in the entire room, or get super close up to their face. Oftentimes I prefer to do this with the baby unwrapped just so that you can see how their arms and legs naturally fall next to them and it looks just more raw and authentic.

This setup is also perfect for capturing newborn detail photos. While I don’t actually use a dedicated macro lens, I love getting in close to photograph the little things that change so quickly. I focus on tiny fingernails, wispy eyelashes, squishy lips, button noses, and delicate fingers wrapped around mom or dad’s hand. These close-up images often become some of the most treasured photographs in the gallery because they preserve details that can feel impossible to remember just a few months later.

One of the things I try to photograph during an in-home newborn session is the nursery itself. Let’s be honest, once you’re a few kids in, the nursery usually gets put on the back burner for obvious reasons. Who has the time when you’re expecting and already parenting other kids? So, when a mom takes the time to decorate a nursery well, I try to get even just one photo. The goal is to capture something from that nursery to remind her of what it looked like and how it fit into our session.
Nursery details often change so quickly, too. The room that feels brand new today will look completely different a year from now. These images help preserve the excitement, anticipation, and love that went into preparing a space for your newest family member. Even if we only spend a few minutes photographing the nursery, those images often become some of the most meaningful in the final gallery.
