DIY First Day of School Picture Ideas

The first day of school has a funny way of sneaking up on us. One minute you’re buying backpacks and labeling school supplies, and the next you’re watching your child walk into a brand new school year full of new experiences and friends. Whether it’s their very first day of preschool or their final first day before graduation, every school year marks another milestone worth remembering. While professional portraits are a wonderful keepsake (and a service I offer if that’s more your speed), you don’t need fancy equipment to capture meaningful first-day photos at home. 

In this blog, I’ll share my best tips to create DIY back to school photos you’ll want to share with the whole family.

Why First Day of School Pics Matter

As parents, we’re often so focused on making it through the morning routine that it’s easy to rush through the photos. But these images become part of your family’s story.

Each year you’ll notice the little changes: missing baby teeth, the extra inch of height, the backpack they insisted on carrying, or the excitement (or nerves!) on their face. Those little details may seem ordinary today, but they’ll become priceless memories before you know it.

Taking a few extra minutes to celebrate the beginning of a new school year also helps build excitement, especially for younger children starting school for the first time. Turning the morning into a special tradition gives them something fun to look forward to while helping ease those first-day jitters.

Honestly, keep it simple with the poses. These photos are more about capturing the excitement of the first day over trying to produce a super intricate, professional photo. Easy Ways to Make First Day of School Pics Feel Special

As a Houston area photographer and mom, I’ve photographed many smiling faces leading up to a new school year. I also know that the time leading up to a new school year is bananas, and there isn’t always time to squeeze in a professional shoot. If that’s your situation this year, here are some of my tips to make sure you don’t miss out on those precious first day photos. DIY is totally doable, and I’ll prove it!

Visit the School Before the First Day

One of my favorite ideas is to visit your child’s school a few days before classes begin.

Without the crowds of students, buses, and busy teachers, you’ll have plenty of time to capture relaxed photos in front of the school’s entrance, sign, or other recognizable landmarks.

Not only does this create beautiful images, but it also gives younger children a chance to become familiar with the building before their big day, making the transition feel a little less intimidating.

Classic Front Porch Photos

Don’t have time to make a special trip to the school? A classic front porch photo is still an amazing and sentimental option. You can incorporate fun props, first-day-of-school signs, and your child’s backpack while adding an extra layer of meaning by including the home that’s been part of so many memories. Years from now, you’ll not only see how much your child has grown, but you’ll also remember the place where they came home after each school day, celebrated birthdays, and made countless childhood memories. These are a go-to for a reason!

Back to School Photo Props 

In both my professional shoots and the photos I take of my own children, there are a few props I like to include. I’ve included a few links to some of my favorites below! (Note: these are affiliate links, meaning I make a small percentage of the sale if you purchase one of your own from the link.)

• Backpacks– Props don’t have to be complicated to be impactful. The beauty of including backpacks is you already have it on hand. Yay for something simple during a busy time! It’s also fun to look back on how they change over the years and evolve from beloved characters to “big kid” bags. (And you’ll love looking back and seeing it go from “almost bigger than they are” to just another part of the morning routine.)

• Letter Boards– This one is pretty self-explanatory, but letter boards are an easy way to document the details. 

• Photo Mat– While this isn’t a prop, this photo mat is my favorite way to display my kids’ school photos from one year to the next. This is one of my favorite mom purchases and have one in my stairwell for each of my three kids. This way, they don’t get buried in memento boxes and instead get to be displayed year after year.
