Texas Bluebonnet family photos by Mel B Photo

As a Houston area newborn & family photographer, I look forward to one of my favorite Texas traditions every spring: bluebonnet sessions.  When my clients are finished having babies, we have to say goodbye to maternity & newborn photos. However, every year I enjoy seeing them put their ideas to use with their little families surrounded by those beautiful blue flowers!  A client turned friend of mine, Janelle Rendon, had such a cool idea in a past session. She incorporated a family picnic that included more than just her household.  With bluebonnet season quickly approaching, I had to share it with you all!

What are bluebonnet sessions?

If you’re new to the Houston, TX area, let me be the first to introduce you to bluebonnets.  As the state flower, these cerulean blooms symbolize state pride and the coming of spring.  They start to pop up all along the highways here in late March to early April which is cause for celebration.  (Literally, we have a bluebonnet festival!) These flowers are an annual tradition for Texans. In fact, you can see them in just about any Texas native’s family photos, including those taken by yours truly. The nostalgia and sense of heritage run deep when it comes to bluebonnets.  Ask any local, and they’ll tell you the same!

There are many reasons why I love it when my Cypress area clients use bluebonnet sessions to update images of their little families.  First, these sessions allow a lot of room for creativity & personalization. As I mentioned before, Janelle made her bluebonnet session it into extended family photos with a fun picnic. (And very fitting since these flowers grow low to the ground. Why not bring a blanket and really submerge yourself into the experience?)

This was one of my favorites to shoot because it incorporated generations, another reason I love this approach.  As a distinctly Texan experience, this tradition is one passed down from generation to generation.  By including grandparents and additional family members in the way that Janelle did, we’re kicking the nostalgia up several notches for an heirloom quality family photo.

2025 Cypress Bluebonnet Mini Sessions

The short blooming period for bluebonnets is coming up quickly! I’m so looking forward to flocking to the fields again in 2025.  Just about everyone here has their own photos of them in the bluebonnet fields. I am honored as a Houston photographer to be a part of such a longstanding tradition rooted in family.  I can hardly wait to catch up with my returning families, some of which include newborns I photographed who aren’t exactly newborns anymore.  That’s part of the beauty of it– generational traditions, growing families, and cherished memories being captured by my lens in a field of stunning bluebonnets.  These are more than just photos and not a here-today-gone-tomorrow trend.
