What Should I Pack for Newborn Photos? | Cypress TX Newborn Photographer

I’ve photographed my fair share of newborn sessions in the Cypress, TX area, and most moms ask the same questions.  One of the most popular questions I get asked is, “What should I bring to our newborn session?”  My personal motto is less is more!  As your newborn photographer, I’ll come prepared with just about everything we’ll need.  Your job is to bring me that sweet baby and anything personal you’d like to include, but we’ll get into that!

A Newborn Photographer’s Essentials

First things first, let’s go over what I will be supplying to your Cypress newborn session.   Because my approach to these sessions is capturing authentic memories of those precious early days with your little one, less really is more. Tons of props & overly posed perfection just isn’t my style, and let’s be honest, that’s not real life with a newborn.  Instead, I pack the essentials.  I will supply a basket or bassinet with soft blankets.  When I combine those items with my variety of both neutral and colored swaddles/wraps, we can capture the coziest, snuggliest images of your baby.  I’ve found that white onesies keep things simple & timeless, so I tote those with me as well.  Most importantly, I’ll be bringing my camera gear which includes lighting for consistent, natural-looking photos.

What Parents Should Pack for a Newborn Session

A quick note to my Cypress moms: this session is for you to capture these fleeting early moments with your baby. Your job at this point is to sleep when you can and soak up as many newborn snuggles as possible. Leave the essentials to me!   That’s not to say you can’t make these photos your own.  If you want to include special swaddles or blankets, for example, those with monograms or names, you’re welcome to do so.  The same is true if you would like to have baby wear a simple, neutral outfit apart from the white onesies I provide.  Oh! And something important to note: since everyone has different preferences when it comes to them, I don’t provide bows. I’m happy to include them in shots, but you’ll need to pack your own bows for baby girl.

Sentimental Items to Include in Newborn Photos

While it isn’t necessary to include anything extra in your Cypress newborn photos, I’ve seen some pretty cool items in the past.  If you want to make your session more personal, some things to consider include:

  1. Family heirlooms
This might look like baby blankets or rattles that have been passed down, or even the rocking chair your grandfather made you.  This can look different for everyone, but you can add a lot of meaning to photos by incorporating these items.
  2. Birth stat chart
If you had one of those little wooden signs at the hospital to announce your baby’s birth, you can absolutely include that in photos.  It’s a simple way to commemorate how much your baby has already and will continue to grow! (And I’m not trying to induce any tears here, but wouldn’t it be great to include that photo in senior photos a million years from now?)
  3. Handmade gifts
Did a friend or family member embroider a hat, blanket, or outfit for baby? Maybe you have a memory bear made from a loved one’s shirt?  These make for great photos too!
  4. Wedding dress
Yes, you read that correctly! One of my Cypress moms included her wedding dress in her newborn session and it made for some beautiful shots with her sweet baby!

Again, this session is for you.  Feel free to make it your own, but remember that less is more!
