If you’re searching for family fun things to do in Houston, TX, especially with little ones in tow, you’re in the right place. Whether you’re trying to fill a slow Saturday, beat the Texas heat, or just get out of the house with your kids, there’s no shortage of family-friendly activities in and around Houston. As a local Houston family photographer and a mom myself, I’ve spent years finding spots that are actually worth it for families with younger kids. These are the places we’ve personally loved, returned to again and again, and recommended to friends.
From splash pads and indoor play spaces to easy outdoor outings and family-friendly restaurants, here’s your go-to list for making memories with your crew.

When the weather isn’t cooperating (which, let’s be honest, is often in Houston), indoor activities are a lifesaver for families with young kids. Thankfully, there’s a huge selection of places geared toward indoor activities for kids and I’ve listed out a couple of mine.
Bouncin Bears is an indoor inflatable park that my now elementary-aged kids still love. It’s perfect for preschool and early elementary ages. Adults get in free, and kid passes are all-day, which means you can leave and come back later (a huge win for avoiding meltdowns or squeezing in nap time).

Kanga’s is another favorite indoor playground of mine. It has a concession stand with all the classic kid favorites like chicken strips, fries, pizza, drinks. They make it really easy to make a full outing out of it. It’s a great mix of play space + convenience, which is a win/win for moms, am I right?

You don’t have to spend a ton to have a really fun day out, especially in Houston. Some of our favorite spots are completely free.
This park is fantastic. The splash pad is seamlessly integrated with the playground, so kids can go back and forth between the two. I love this setup, especially in the Texas heat, because they can cool off whenever they need to.
The playground itself is massive and works for a wide range of ages, especially those steadier climbers. Plus, it has great bathrooms and lots of covered seating, which makes a big difference for parents.

On the third Saturday of most months, this train runs free to the community. It’s so fun for littles! The ride lasts about 5–10 minutes, and it’s one of those simple experiences that kids absolutely love. I even did this while pregnant with my third, so it holds a special place in my heart.

If you’re looking to get outside (when the weather allows), these are some of our favorite easy, family-friendly options.
The Woodlands Waterway is a long, open walkway that winds through The Woodlands, passing restaurants, hotels, and the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion. It’s beautiful, stroller-friendly, and perfect for kids on scooters. I used to walk here with my kiddo in a stroller while my husband went for a run. It’s just one of those peaceful, easy outings that works for everyone.

The Woodlands trolley is free and runs all throughout The Woodlands area, including along the Waterway. When my kids were little, we would ride it just for fun, hopping on and off at different stops. It also goes to places like the mall, library, and Hughes Landing, which makes it a fun (and practical) way to explore.

Riva Row Boathouse holds such a special memory for me. When my kids were little, I took each of them on a one-on-one date here. We rented a canoe and spent time out on the water together. You can also rent swan paddle boats, kayaks, and paddleboards or bring your own. It’s a really unique way to spend time together as a family.

Houston summers are no joke, so water-based activities are a must. Pack your sunscreen and snacks, and head to one of the locations below!
FINS is a near and dear favorite of mine. I actually worked here straight out of college and later brought my own kids here to learn to swim. It’s incredibly family-oriented, with multiple locations around the northern Houston area including Cypress which I linked above. Whether you’re looking for lessons or just a great introduction to the water, this is a fantastic place to start.

Zube Spray Park is a county park with simple, no-frills, free fun. It has county-style bathrooms, a nearby playground, and picnic tables, so you can easily turn it into a full park day. I’ve heard it was closed for maintenance at one point, so it’s worth checking current status before heading out.

Sometimes the best family outing is just a good meal in a place where kids are allowed to be kids and someone else handles the dishes. These are a few of my family’s go-tos, no constant shushing required.
Located in Cypress, Paradigm Brewing Company has a backyard porch feel with an open-air restaurant and a wide open space where kids can run and play. It’s relaxed, family-friendly, and perfect for letting kids be kids while you enjoy a meal.
This one leans more toward a date night spot for my husband and me. Schilleci’s is “our place.” It’s family-owned, and you can feel that in the best way possible. They recently moved locations, and the food is incredible if you’re in the mood for upscale Cajun cuisine. While it’s more of a special outing, it’s still a meaningful one for families who want to mix things up.

These are the “make a day of it” type places. Check out some of these for fun weekend activities, outings with friends, or when you want something a little different.
This is one of those all-around hotspots. At the Boardwalk, you’ll find restaurants, live music, holiday events, kids’ activities, and seasonal photo ops. It’s a great place to walk around, grab a bite to eat, and let the kids enjoy the atmosphere. It has all the makings for a full day of activities without having to deal with loading & unloading littles ones out of car seats.
I go to these a few times a year with my sister and daughter, and it’s always a fun Saturday afternoon. It’s a slower-paced outing that still feels like something special, especially if your kids enjoy browsing and exploring. Head to the Cy-Fair Women’s Club website for a vendor list & more information about the fall show!

If you’re looking for even more ideas, especially for events, giveaways, and things happening around the Cypress area, I highly recommend checking out my friend Janelle’s blog. She’s an incredible resource for local families and shares so many fun opportunities happening throughout the year. And, of course, you can follow along on her IG for more!

One of my favorite things about all of these outings? They’re the moments your kids will remember and the ones you’ll wish you had more photos of later. And I just so happen to specialize in preserving those memories.
Whether we meet up at one of your favorite local parks, document a slow morning at home, or plan a session in one of Houston’s many beautiful studios, my goal is always the same: to capture your family as you are right now.
