When I received the inquiry for this NICU Houston TX Fresh 48 session, I knew it would be emotional for me. The twin girls I photographed were born in the same hospital where my own son once stayed in the NICU. Every Fresh 48 session I shoot is special, but this one felt personal.
If you have ever experienced a NICU stay, you understand the weight of it. The sound of the monitors, the waiting, and the mix of fear and fierce love all stay with you long after you leave. Walking back into those halls brought memories & emotions in a very unexpected & healing way.

Before we dive into the emotional details of this session, let’s cover a FAQ related to NICU Fresh 48 session. Yes, you can take Fresh 48 photos in the NICU, but only as long as the hospital and medical team approve it. Every hospital has different visitor policies, so the first step is always checking with your charge nurse. If your baby is stable and staff is comfortable, a photographer is often allowed to come in. Clear communication is key!

Leads, monitors, and tubes stay connected at all times. Your baby’s health and safety will always come first. Side note: I do not remove wires in editing, even though technically I could. Those details are part of your story. One day, you will look back and see how far your baby has come. From fragile NICU days to thriving years later, those wires become proof of strength.

If your baby’s stay extends beyond the first 48 hours, there is often flexibility. It may not technically be fresh 48, but the heart behind it remains the same. Documenting these early days still matters.

Preparing for a Fresh 48
Houston Hospital NICU Fresh 48 Newborn Session

I arrived to Houston Methodist in The Woodlands ready to photograph the precious newborn baby girls. Soon after, I realized I was only a few doors down from the room where I once sat with my own baby. Then a nurse walked in.

She looked familiar, so I asked how long she had worked there. She told me she helped open that wing of the hospital. That is when it clicked: the same nurse had cared for my son years ago. She likely stood beside me during some of my hardest moments early on in his life. And here she was, years later, now that I’m on the other side of it all.
I expected to feel undone by that realization. Instead, I was surprised to find that it felt full circle. Eight years later, I was standing there as a photographer, not the anxious new mom. That shift meant more than I can explain & it was clear that the Lord was at work with this one.

Toward the end of the session, mom grew teary. She told me having these photos taken was good for her soul & I understood exactly what she meant.
That was when I shared my own NICU story with her. I told her about our early struggles and how far we’ve come. It was a beautiful experience to get to encourage her as someone who’s lived what she’s currently experiencing. I told her one day she will show these images to her daughters and say, “Look how strong you were.”
Fresh 48 sessions are not just about documenting tiny fingers and hospital bracelets. It is about preserving the beginning of a powerful story. These images become proof of resilience and reminders of strength.
Years from now, these twins will see where their journey began much like my own son now. And that’s what makes sessions like these completely priceless.
