How to Prep for Cypress TX Sunflower Sessions

Houston area family poses for family photos in sunflower fields in texas

Now that bluebonnet photos have wrapped up for my family photography clients, it’s time to switch gears for Cypress TX sunflower sessions!  I had the pleasure of photographing a local family surrounded by those tall, golden blooms last summer, and I have been so thrilled to offer it to more Houston area families in 2025. If you’re planning a sunflower family session this summer, you’re in for something special! Whether this is your first time booking a session or you’re a seasoned pro, here’s what to know before stepping into the field.

What to Wear for Texas Sunflower Sessions

Wardrobe questions are some of the most common when it comes to planning family photo sessions.  What’s less common is consideration for shoes.  Similar to my recommendations for bluebonnets, it’s important to remember that we will be in a field in Texas in the middle of the summertime.  In other words, closed-toed shoes are of the utmost importance! I could outline the reasons why, but again, a field is home to lots of wildlife.  I hope I don’t see a snake during our session together, but it’s always a possibility!  What better excuse to whip out your favorite pair of cowboy boots?  They’ll pair perfectly with the setting too!

My Favorite Wardrobe Pieces for Cypress TX Sunflower Sessions

Styling is a big part of what makes your photos timeless, cohesive, and full of personality. Given the summer heat and scenery, choosing the right fabrics can make you more comfortable and create a polished look that fits the theme. Here are some tried-and-true wardrobe tips for sunflower family photos:

Think light and natural.

White eyelet lace, flowy cotton or linen dresses, and soft neutrals photograph beautifully against the bright backdrop of yellow blooms and green stems. You don’t want your outfit to compete with the flowers—you want it to complement them.

Denim is always a win.

A well-fitted pair of jeans or a classic chambray dress adds a timeless feel to your look. Denim pairs beautifully with sunflowers and adds just the right amount of texture to your photos. Add in those cowboy boots I mentioned with those jeans, and you’ve got yourself a truly Texan family photoshoot! And you genuinely can’t go wrong with a pair of overalls for kids!

Remember to Accessorize

A great cowboy hat or straw hat can tie everything together beautifully and provide shade in the summer heat!  Accessories are a great way to add personality and style to your photos, don’t be afraid to have fun with this part.

Choosing Colors for Your Texas Sunflower Sessions

Just like with other types of family sessions, the colors you choose for your wardrobe should complement each other without being too uniform.  We’re shooting for cohesive, not cookie-cutter!  At the same time, we need to keep the colors of the scenery in mind when selecting pieces.  So, what’s the magic formula?

Avoid stark or neon colors.

Sunflowers already bring a lot of brightness to the frame. Stick to soft, earthy tones—think sage, mustard, cream, dusty blue, and rust. Loud colors, true primary colors, or logos can distract from the natural vibe of the session.

Opt for Pastels & Neutrals

This is going to seem counterintuitive, but avoid black for these sessions. While it’s usually a clean option for a neutral, it’s a bit harsh for the background of sunflower sessions.  Other colors that you may naturally reach for but should reconsider are true blues & purples, as well as any colors that compete with the background. You want to stand out, not blend in– that’s when we get a green screen/floating head effect that no one loves. Instead, pastels photograph beautifully against the greens & yellows, and you can never go wrong with a true neutral.

Coordinate, don’t match.

Mix textures and tones in the same color palette, not identical color matches, to create dimension without looking too uniform. Fabrics like the lace I mentioned before add dimension to the photos, for example!

What to Expect at Your Cypress TX Sunflower Family Session

Compared to others, these sessions move quickly and you should come prepared for a bit of adventure.  We’ll be out in nature (it’ll get a little dusty) and some light walking may be involved, so bug spray, snacks, and water are always a good idea.  For the best lighting, I like to photograph families at golden hour which is near sunset when the sun is low and dreamy, and the flowers look their absolute best. Once we’re wrapped up, you can expect a proofing gallery within a few days so that you can choose your favorites and then I’ll edit the final images for your keepsake gallery. Trust me—you’re going to fall in love with how these traditional Texas photos turn out!
