As bluebonnet season quickly approaches here in Cypress, Texas, my clients are starting to plan their outfits for these beautiful, time-honored family sessions. After years of photographing families in fields full of these vibrant blue blooms, I have a few tips to help make planning your bluebonnet family session wardrobe even simpler.
Shoes may not be the first thing you consider when putting together your family’s outfits, but when it comes to bluebonnet family sessions, they should be! Specifically, I recommend closed-toe shoes. While I’ve been photographing Cypress, TX families in bluebonnet fields for years and have rarely seen snakes, these fields are still snake territory—so it’s best to come prepared. Cowboy boots are a perfect choice, offering protection while also fitting the classic Texas aesthetic of these sessions.
The main colors to avoid when planning your family’s outfits for bluebonnet sessions are neon shades. Bright, highlighter tones of yellow, pink, and lime green tend to clash with the natural colors of the bluebonnet fields.
Other colors to avoid include:
Make no mistake— when it comes to bluebonnet photos, color is absolutely welcome! If you want to incorporate vibrant tones, opt for pastels instead. Soft shades of pink, yellow, green, and blue beautifully complement the landscape without being too harsh or distracting. They’re perfect for the spring theme & photograph beautifully next to those famous blue flowers! You can never go wrong with neutrals like creams & whites, especially against the natural landscape. If you love warmer shades, opt for softer options like rust or terracotta rather than primary shades.
Bluebonnet photos are a beloved Texas tradition, so if there’s ever a time to embrace classic Texas style, this is it!
Here are some of my favorite outfit recommendations:
Denim – A timeless, neutral choice that always looks great.
White cotton dresses – Light and breathable, perfect for the Texas heat, and they complement the scenery beautifully.
White eyelet lace – A delicate, heirloom-inspired look that adds texture and charm.
Spring straw hats – A fun way to add personality and style to your photos, and very fitting for the spring floral theme of the sessions.
Overalls – Such a cute option for kids, especially toddlers!
I will be opening bookings for bluebonnet sessions once we have a better idea of bloom timing and weather conditions.
