Preparing for a Fresh 48 in Houston TX

January 15, 2026

Fresh 48 photo shoots have quickly become one of the favorite types of sessions I offer as a Houston newborn photographer. It goes without saying how special it is to be a part of a family’s first couple of days with their new baby. Giving them something tangible to look back on once they’re home and settled, however, is something truly meaningful.

Those first 48 hours with your new baby can be pure bliss. But my favorite part about Fresh 48 sessions is how realistic they are. The prep for these sessions is a little bit different than the other types of newborn sessions that I offer. So, I wanted to be sure to include a resource specifically for my Fresh48 clients so you can begin preparing as you await the arrival of your new baby.

What to Pack for Your Fresh 48 Session

If you’re expecting a new baby, one of your top searches right now is probably what to pack in your hospital bag. And if you’re planning a Fresh48 photo shoot, there are a couple of additional items you may want to include as well.

Personalized hats, blankets, and stuffies are some of the most popular items I see in Fresh 48 sessions. Wooden or acrylic baby stat signs (the ones that include baby’s name, birth date, weight, and length) are also a favorite. While these items are absolutely not required, they can be a really fun way to personalize your session! Adding them in can help create something special to look back on from those early days. These are also great items to add to your registry if you’re interested in having them on hand for your session.

(Note: I’ll be sharing a few favorite local boutiques and affiliate links soon for these items.)

Including Older Siblings in Your Fresh 48 Session

If you already have children, the next part of planning involves logistics — specifically, getting your older kiddos to the hospital. If your hospital allows visitors, be sure to have a plan in place so that someone can bring the big kids in for the session!

One of the questions I get most often is whether older siblings can be involved in Fresh48 sessions. The answer is absolutely yes! This is such a big milestone when first babies become older siblings. I am always beyond thrilled to help capture those moments.

Here’s one less thing to add to your shopping list: big sis/bro shirts. While personalized shirts can be cute, they’re often difficult to see when siblings are holding the baby. They can also sometimes be a little distracting in photos. Unless you have your heart set on them, don’t feel like this is something you need to purchase. What is important is bringing your older children along — I promise those images will be some of the sweetest in your gallery.

What to Expect From a Fresh 48 Session

While this isn’t something you need to pack or prepare for, it is important to remember that Fresh48 sessions are a little different than in-home or studio newborn photo shoots. Of all the newborn sessions I offer, these are the least polished  and that’s very intentional.

That doesn’t mean your images won’t be beautiful! You can still take a moment to freshen up your makeup or wear a cozy mommy-and-me robe if you’d like. It simply means that these photos are honest. I don’t edit out hospital bracelets, cords, monitors, or the little details that tell the true story of those first hours. Recently, I shared about a NICU session I photographed.  I left everything exactly as it was, because I want my clients to remember this time as it happened. Think of your Fresh48 session as a time capsule, not a curated highlight reel. These are the photos you’ll appreciate long after the epidurals have worn off.
